Last April 2, 2018, a UDM fan of Katy Perry received what he referred to as the “bestest graduation gift ever” after the American pop star asked him on stage during her one-night concert in Manila on Monday.
From the Baccalaureate Ceremonies wearing his graduation toga , Josh Madrid went straight to watch the concert and luckily was noticed by Perry from the Mall of Asia Arena stage, as she scouted the thousands-strong crowd for a Tagalog-speaking coach.
Josh, a graduating Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from the College of Engineering and Technology of UDM, was clearly stunned by being inches away from Katy Perry, his idol.
“Tomorrow is my graduation,” was the longest string of words he could say, before he was joined by Perry on the floor where Madrid sat to compose himself.
The last word up for translation was “selfie” — Madrid’s signal to use his phone to capture the moment with Perry, who gamely posed for wacky photo with her speechless fan.
“Let’s graduate with style!” Perry said.
“I will forever treasure [that] moment. I’m so blessed,”, said Josh.
Perry’s Manila concert is part of her ongoing world tour, “Witness,” which will span over a hundred international venues by its conclusion in August this year.
